Snatch

How are gypsy represented in this scene?

Firstly it shows them as the bad people, this is done from the very first shot, showing them outside the landrover, and the camera shot from the inside of the land rover. The mise en scene of the location is a dirt run down area, with them all living in caravans. This suggests to the audience that their poor, and they don't really carw about their living conditions. It also shows the children as children who have been brought up badly, this is shown by the way they pick pocket the the two men, swear, and try get money out of the main charactor. The young boy demanding money from the charactor gives the audience the impression that all gypsies are money grabbers. The audience also gets the impression that gypsys all behave like animals, this is shown via them spitting, and the gypsy pulling his trousers up after squatting next to a caravan to go to the toliet. Their also shown as uneductated and stupid, this is shown via the way that they speak. Speech which is hard to understand. It also shows them as fighters, willing to take on anyone. This is shown when he tries to start a fight with the bigger main charactor. Overall i believe a huge representation is created during the scene.

Do you believe the Media creates an unfair representation of certain minority groups?

I personally believe they do, during this scene the media creates a massive representation of gypsys. Firstly it shows them as money grabbing animals. I believe this is unfair, because it gives the audience the impression that all gypsy are like this. Which isn't true.

  1. Some good analysis here and a clear focus on the scene. Use the word representation instead of shown and also this is crying out for the word stereotype to be used! Try having a list of Media terms next to you when you write and ticking them off as and when you use them.
