Why are with what sucecess are traditional media institutions adapting to the challenge posed by new/digital media?

Traditional media insituations have adapted to new and digital media today through several ways, firstly to get across to their fan base they've created social networking pages on Facebook, Twitter etc. The Superbad official Facebook page has 6.4 billion likes. The Harry Brown page has 98,561 likes. On these pages their able to post videos, photos, compeitions etc. It also allows the audience to get involved, it allows them to comment on the videos and pictures. Social networking is a great way to get their product across, simply because it's free. And the chances are, it'll be a lot more effective compared to other advertising methods. They've also had to adapt by releasing their films on high quality dvds, such as Blu ray. Blu ray allows the user to watch the film in high defintion quality. More and more people are starting to buy Blu Ray discs, so the creators have to adapt from the simple DVD to the Blu Ray DVD. As the internet is a well used place these days, they've spread their product from the cinema's to the internet. They've done this by creating official websites, on this is pictures from the films, the pictures are a wide varity of pictures, from long shots, to close ups. The close ups allow the user to get more personal with the characters. The wide shots help set the scene, and tell the audience what sort of enviroment the film will be set in. For example with Attack the block, there's a wide shot with all the characters infront of a run down council estate, so this tells the audience that the film will be based in this enviroment. Another way they've adapted is being able to buy the films legally online, more and more people are starting to watch films on the internet instead of buying DVD's. So they've moved their films to websites such as iTunes, iTunes allows the user to download the film on to their computer for the same price as the DVD. Harry Brown is selling on iTunes for £7.99, which is the same as the DVD price. This way they'll be able to watch the films throughout devices other than a Tv, such as iPods, iPhones, apple tvs, and smart phones. Some more examples of film websites they use is Netflix and Lovefilm, they allow you to download the films or rent the films. And you pay a monthly price. So this gives the audience a way of watching the films online without doing it illegally. And the final way they try to access the audience is via a well known website called YouTube, Youtube allows people to create an account to upload videos for everyone to see. YouTube gets billions of hits daily, so this is a great way to show their product. An example of this would be the official Attack the Block YouTube page, on this page they have 654 subscribers and 3,754,045 hits. On this page it has a link to their main websites, and videos such as the official trailer, and videos which allow you to meet the characters personally. This gives the audience the feeling that they're getting to know them beter, and get in to their personal lives. It also shows a 'behind the scenes' part, this also gives the user a sense of personal identity, as it allows them to get into the personal sides of Attack The Block. So overall the media has had to adapt in several ways to match the modern media today.
