New and digital media offers media instituations different ways of reaching audiences.
Media uses a range of different platforms and tecniques to access their audiences, over the past few years these methods have expanded, and they're still expanding today. For example due to social networking, insituations can now access their audiences through websites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. This is done by advertising. On Facebook and Twitter the advertising is done in small sections, for example on Facebook they have a small bar on the side where all the advertising is done, the adverts that are shown all depend on your past internet history. I've had personal experiance with this, i was browsing on one website, and adverts from that website appeared on the Facebook home page. It's verys similar on Twitter aswell. But YouTube is completely different, it displays several adverts to you. Firstly one advert before your selected video plays, this advert tends to be anyone advert (Not depending on your search history). With some adverts it gives you the option of skipping the advert, this all depends on the amount of views the YouTube videos has. If it's a high number of views, it won't allow you to skip the advert. They've done this because it's a popular video, so they know a high number of people will watch this advert. Because of the modern day technology today and how simple it is, the media can be accessed by almost everybody. Compared to many years ago, were only a few people could access these media platforms. So this allows the insitition to spread out their media accross several platforms. Also thanks to the technology today, it allows the audience a lot more freedom when watching media on televisions etc. Because of channels like E4 + 1 and Dave + 1 it allows you to watch programs an hour late. Sky offer a service which allows you to watch the program at anytime, as long as you record the program using their software. Tv channels have spread across the other media platforms, an example of this would be the BBC, they've spread their media across to the internet with a service called BBC iplayer, BBC iplayed allows the audience to watch a program anytime within the 30 days it was released. This allows the audience a lot more freedom towards TV instead of a strict programming list. Media insituations are also using technology likes phones to access their audience, they do this through apps, texts and many more options. An example would be o2 prioritys, this service sends you texts message every now and then with different deals they have to offer. All you have to do is simply sign up, this makes the customer feel special, like their getting something back from using the service. Which will make them use the service again or to promote to others. So overall thanks to modern technology it's a lot easier for the insitutions to access their audiences.
